How To Be Loving And Live From The Heart

I wanted to be useful and connected and, loving, no matter what's going on with me emotionally, no matter what's going on with the other person, no matter what's going on in the world. And that requires  a higher vibration.  Lots of mystics talk about love, being a state of consciousness.  What that means  is, love is not a feeling, love is higher vibration.

Bio

Danielle LaPorte needs little introduction. Oprah Winfrey has said she “is uniquely connecting the world together with a spiritual energy that matters,” while Marianne Williamson has called her “a bright light in the modern priestess hood.’ As the founder of DanielleLaPorte.com, ranked by Forbes as one of the Top 100 Websites for Women and visited by millions of people each month, Danielle is one of the most critically acclaimed spiritual thought leaders of our time.

With her highly anticipated new book, How to Be Loving as Your Heart is Breaking Open and The World is Waking Up, releasing October 11 2022, Danielle has written the modern day manifesto on how to uncondition your mind from all kinds of social programming, tap into the intelligence of the heart, and elevate your life through the quality of your own thoughts.

Myrna: What is your journey from making love a priority in your life? How did that come about?

Danielle: For a long time, I was led by the question, how do I want to feel? And now the question is what do I want to embody? And the journey there was me realizing that even if I was having a bad day and wasn't in a state of happiness, wasn’t feeling like the way I wanted to feel. I still felt connected to something higher and more meaningful. But really, the light bulb was when I realized that, I could still be useful to my friends, even if I was in the dark night of my soul. And then it occurred to me maybe this whole happiness thing, the end game, it's important.

And I wanted to be useful and connected and loving, no matter what's going on with me emotionally, no matter what's going on with the other person, no matter what's going on in the world. And that requires like a higher vibration. And you know, lots of mystics talk about love, of course, being a state of consciousness, but what that brings us to is, love is not a feeling, love is higher vibration.

I have always wanted to do composting.  I see my brother doing it but I have always thought it was too much work!

Then I got a Lomi! Lomi allows me to turn my food scraps into dirt with the push of a button. Lomi is a countertop electric-composter that turns scraps to dirt in under 4 hours in express mode. There’s no smell when it runs and it’s really quiet. My plants took a beating from hurricane Ian so I have been using the grow mode in my Lomi to get composting dirt for my plants.  The grow mode takes 24 hours.

The beautiful thing about this is that it allows me to be eco-friendly. Since I got my Lomi, I throw out way less garbage. That means it's not going to landfills and producing methane gas. Instead, I turn my waste into nutrient-rich dirt that I can feed to my plants.

If you want to start making a positive environmental impact or just make clean up after dinner that much easier, Lomi is perfect for you. Head to LOMI.COM/TRANSFORM and use the promo code TRANSFORM to get $50 off your Lomi. That’s $50 off when you head to L-O-M-I.COM/TRANSFORM and use promo code TRANSFORM at checkout. Food waste is gross, Lomi is your solution! With the holidays just around the corner, Lomi will make the perfect gift for someone on your shopping list.

Power of Love: Intelligence of the heart

Myrna: Well, it's very hard. They always say that that happiness is not an external thing. You know, it comes from inside and even if you have an, external locus of control, which is basically where your happiness depends on other people, circumstances or things. It's only going to be temporary, because those things can’t continue for too long. Which is why they say that your happiness has to come from inside. And that means that whatever is going on outside, it's not going to bother you. But it's extremely, hard to do. You almost have to be like an enlightened being. That's the, power of love and the intelligence of the heart.

Danielle: Everybody's a little enlightened, the Zen Buddhist philosophy is everybody's enlightened, we just have forgotten.

Myrna: Yes, we don't operate in it because we forgotten.  So, that was your journey into becoming, loving. You wanted to feel good all the time. You wanted to embody you. You learned, how to live from the heart, gratitude and, vibration. You talk about, vibration. Wayne Dyer talks about, vibration. Abraham Hicks talks about, vibration.  What kind of work did you do to make sure your, vibration, is good?

Loving yourself through the heartbreak

Danielle: It's not so much that I want to feel good all the time. Who wants to suffer, I don't want to suffer. Right? But it's a place of even if you are suffering and you're not feeling good, you're in a state of acceptance with it. It's like, okay, this is what's happening. I'm gonna love myself through this. I created this. I'm not going to push it away. I'm going to bring it into my, heart. I'm going to have space for it. I'm going to be more gentle with it. I'm going to speak to myself more lovingly. But more specifically to your question about how to get there.

Well, I think it's a lifelong journey, but certainly, big challenges questioning if, am I in the right career? Is this the faith that I should be holding?  Suffering that leads us to meaningfulness and purpose. There are those challenging circumstances and then there's just dedication. Like I want to know truth. I want to be love. No matter what, I'm committed.

My commitment, doesn't mean it's always easy, but I do the things that I know makes me more compassionate and more forgiving. And those things are ancient tools that have been around a long, long time. Contemplation, it's a prayer practice. It's, sifting through all the different practices and types of, meditation, until I found the kind of, meditation practice, that I actually wanted to do, that made me feel like energized and lit up.

How to tap into heart intelligence

Myrna: I know that acceptance is very important. And it's very important to accept your loved ones. Because a lot of times we get into relationships, and we want to change people and we don't accept them. But yeah, talking about accepting suffering. That is deep.

How do we tap into, heart intelligence? One of the most powerful books that I've read is “The Alchemist.” The entire book is about listening to your, heart, and, how to live from the heart. I thought that we were supposed to listen to your gut. Your gut is what tells you when something is wrong, but listening to your, heart. This is a great because we are tapping to the, intelligence of the heart. It's amazing.

Danielle: It’s important to make that distinction between the gut and, heart because gut is more instinct. The gut is gonna say run from danger. This is basic survival stuff. But we don't want to be in that survival mode every day. We want to be in a state. So just like move it up. The, chakra system, moving on up your body move into the, heart.  Everybody knows on a cellular, psychological level, what love is and what it feels like to be connected to soul, to be connected to others, to be giving and receiving loving kindness.

We just have to be still and we have to connect to the, heart, space, heart chakra, and higher consciousness. There's no fear just presence. Don't worry about tomorrow, don't worry about the rent not right this moment. And you move into that gentleness that calms down your nervous system, both your, parasympathetic, and your, central nervous system. When your nervous system is calm you think more clearly. You're not all panicked, or jacked up with anxiety and then you make more, loving choices.  Loving choices, which all comes from quality of thought. You reference Dr. Wayne Dyer. Dr Dyer had a lot to say about the thoughts we think.

Can everyone be loving?

Myrna: Right, that's amazing. Now, I want to circle back to something you said that everybody knows what it's like to give and receive love. Do you think that everybody knows that? Because there's a lot of people that don't love themselves and I believe that if you don't love yourself you actually can't give and receive love.

Danielle: Okay, there's two things in there. I think in our depths, we do know love. And I think to get to the depths of love, we have to plumb those depths. You got to be still, you've got to get yourself in nature. You've got to ask those questions. It's in there. The truth is in there. Is it buried? Absolutely. Do we doubt it? Yes, we have lots of so called evidence from how we're raised in society that is not a loving place to be? Totally, but it's the truth is eternal? It's in there, you're gonna find it.

You just got to look for what was that? Oh, loving other people and loving yourself? Yeah, I've thought about this very specifically for a while. Because you know, in this in our self-help space, there's that theory of like, don't fall in love with someone who doesn't love themselves because they're not gonna love you properly. I think it's half-truth because we're all one. We all come from the same source, and we're all connected.

Then does it really matter if I'm loving myself first, but if I'm loving you first, and I've witnessed people who clearly had on a surface level, self-esteem issues, broken, not loving themselves, and I have seen them be, loving. Learn to love someone in their community. Learn to love the person who abandoned them. And it changed their whole way of living, obviously, with a lot of work, digging in and plumbing it out.

Do you have heart intelligence?

Myrna: So how do we tap into the, intelligence of the heart? Is it through meditation or how do we do it?

Danielle: Yeah, It's the practices. First you gotta want it. Want to sleep through the night? Do you want to be peaceful? Do you want to have more intimate conversations?  Want to know your real power? Awesome, great. There are some things you can do.  Find a, meditation, practice that works for you. Not one where you sit down on the, meditation cushion, and you hate being there and it's grueling and you don't feel lit up or expanded. That's just like New Age punishment. Find a, prayer practice, that works for you.

Guided meditation heart center, is heart centering, prayer, and time for stillness.  Our society is obsessed with being productive and it pulls us away from our wisdom. You need to be still to hear your, higher guidance. If you are always moving, you are going to get confusing information. So, stillness could be as simple as 15 minutes in the morning before anybody else in your house wakes up. Or it's for those of us who have done, yoga, the last pose. It doesn't matter how sweaty and bendy your, yoga, class was, the last pose is always, corpse pose. You just lie there in stillness. And people think, oh, this is my break. But actually that, corpse pose, the great, yoga, teachers tell you everything is moving towards that stillness.

So that you get to integrate all the work you did with your body and your mind. So, the end of the day, you ask yourself, what do you learn today? Who do you love? How did you get a little more time? What are you grateful for? That's integrating lessons of the day. And then you don't need to repeat the same lessons. Ideally, tomorrow you start fresh. Yeah. So, practices.

Loving yourself through your meditation practice

Myrna: Well, my, meditation practice, is sitting and concentrating on the breath. Sometimes I do a, walking meditation, because I walk in the park and there's a wooded area that I walk through. And when I'm in there, I'm talking to God and I am visualizing some of the things I want to manifest.  What do you think about a, walking meditation?

Danielle: I have a very similar practice. It's more of a working meditation. There's lots of, prayer, in my life. There's definitely, breathwork, for sure. I pray and meditate and it's all mostly focused on being of service and healing. And I know that as I'm doing that, doing the work, getting closer to God and being more aware, I'm getting healed as well.

I use the light of the sun in, meditation, as well. The sun is very powerful. My belief this is, through some research into mysticism, because the soul is really the source. The sun is really the symbol, if not the embodiment, of the collective soul. And then in all the, meditations, that I've designed, I work with an energy healer that I've been with for many years, we co create all of these, meditation experiences, which is part of my offering. Almost every, meditation, begins with seeing this golden light, the sun. That is the symbol, the visual of your soul's vastness. Your only job really, is to just bask in that light, you don't have to reach for that light. You don't even have to amplify that light.

The God source is always trying to find you, wants to get into every thought and every crevice, just bow down at your intention. I'm going to be aligned today. I'm going for this walk. And you step into it and you just receive the guidance.

Myrna; Beautiful, I'm in the self-improvement space and I know that, meditation, works for me, because one of the one of the byproducts of, meditation, is that you don't get upset very often and you're always in a calm space.

What is heart centered manifesting?

Danielle: Heart centered manifesting, you come up with a visual. You think it through every day. You see it, feel it, taste it, you really bring it to life. And you just keep watering it, anybody can manifest anything, there is a basic science of, manifesting. You don't have to be enlightened. You don't have to be a good person. You don't have to have great intentions. If you want the car and you think about it enough. You will manifest the car.

I'm interested in is what I would call, heart centered manifesting, because I think ego centered manifesting has really gotten a lot of us into a lot of trouble. And it's not very fulfilling ultimately. So, it's like heart centered vision. comes from a place of knowing that your happiness matters to me that we all come from the same source. So, if I get the car, how is that going to be a benefit or harmful to others?  So, what's your vision got to do with everybody else? That's a really basic great question to ask. How does your fulfillment lead to the fulfillment of others or does it take from others? My belief is that we have a, heart centered vision, and you can still want all the same things.

You can still want the car and the relationship and the money, whatever it is. When it's on behalf of being of service, I think the soul is going to help lead you to more fulfillment. So, when you get the car, let's just keep using that example. Maybe you're doing some meals on wheels or maybe it's just that you're happier, more relaxed, and you're better in your community. Maybe that car actually helps you be a more chill, loving mother, whatever it is, somehow your happiness is kind of spilling over.

Whereas if that was an ego goal to just get the car, going to get the car and you're gonna want to the next thing, no lasting fulfillment. Soon you’re gonna want a better car. You're gonna need the car and you're gonna need the handbag. Then you need the likes on Instagram on and on. Heart centered manifesting, relax and it comes.

Book: How To Be Loving as your Heart is Breaking Open and the World is Waking up

Myrna: Well, that's actually pretty good. Tell us about your book “How to be Loving as your heart is breaking open and the World is Waking Up” Why did you write it? What do you want readers to walk away with after reading? And how can you know listeners pick up a copy of it?

Danielle: This is what I want to have happen. I want to get gazillion emails for years of people telling me things like, I read you book how to be loving and forgive my mother or I speak more gently to myself, or I got over this heartbreak or I finally started asking my neighbor what they need. I just want to I want to hear those stories of how my book helped others become, loving.

I wrote it because it's my first book in five years. I know lots of people are saying, Wow, this is so timely, did you know, the world was gonna fall apart? I did not know the world was gonna be in the state that it was in. It is on time, right?

Myrna: Yes. So, yeah. Now, part of the title is when your heart is breaking open, so and you said something a minute ago about, your heart is breaking but you're still loving yourself. Is that part of it? Is it for people with a broken heart to love themselves?

Danielle: I think that's in reference to we think we're falling apart when we're heartbroken, whether it's the state of our community or an ending relationship or we get canned from a job; you're not actually breaking, you're expanding. All that heartbreak is showing you what you're made of. It's showing you where all the love, the real love is in your life, how capable you are. It's a spiritual emergence.

My website is www.Daniellelaporte.com. I'm Danielle Laporte on Instagram. I'm there all the time. I have a membership, beautiful membership program called heart centered membership.

It's like a spiritual support system. And we also have a program called the heart centered leadership program where we've got this really gorgeous curriculum of workshops, conversation starters, for coaches and HR directors and Unitarian, so it's being used at really high levels of business. It's being used in yoga studios.

The Energy of Tai Chi

Myrna: Tell us about tell us about, Tai Chi, and how that harmonizes the, mind, body and spirit, I don't know if you want to start off by saying how, Tai Chi, is different from other forms of movement.

Master Lama: Sure, yeah. Well, it's, again, the roots coming from ancient India. They had an old practice years ago that's been modified and kind of westernized over the last several 100 years. But it was called, qigong, and what they did you might remember, he would paint their forehead with three golden stripes. And then they would put a magenta dot right in the root of the nose.  Today, they pretty much just do the magenta. It stood for, mind body spirit.

So that's the roots of our teachings because they come from the city of practice. So, the idea is, is that we have an, energy body, that if we're healthy, is seven feet in all direction right from the sternum. A master this field can expand his, energy body, to as much as 10 to 12 feet around him. The physical body is actually housed inside a box. It's interesting to know that the Earth itself has the same kind of, energy body, around it and we have in our bodies.

Chakras harmonize our mind body spirit

In, yoga, they refer to the psychic components called, chakras, which means whales that spins right? These, chakras, have spokes and are referred to in Sanskrit as our, energy body.  There's 72,000 of those that we were born with. Around puberty about half of these folks are turned in and half of them returned out.  There's a chance now to start turning those spokes out and then they're supposed to spin like a nice wheel.

Well, the shockers are as big as it is a stairwell on a sailboat. Now the exercises were designed to open up the Nautilus and then harmoniously take the, seven chakras, and spin o harmonize our, mind body spirit,  and when they do we get a lot of spiritual, mental and also physical benefits. And it's just amazing, you know, people were to go to rasaji.com and see the testimony. The people that's been doing our 45 Day Challenge, where they're only doing about 20 to 40 minutes a day. And in the process, you'll start to hear people have a direct experience with the energy that we refer to as the, Chi.

Myrna: Yes, I've heard of that. Now I've been spending some time myself, trying to work with the, energy body, I'm conscious of it because I've been following you know, Sadhguru and I read his book ” Inner Engineering.” I'm now reading his book on “Karma” it's all part of, yoga, and he talks about this, energy body. So, when I walk, I am practicing extending my energy out and in the, energy field. And I do also do, chakra meditation to harmonize my, mind body spirit.  But yes, Tai Chi Gung, is, is awesome. And I see sometimes  people in the park doing the, Tai Chi Gung, movements.

The seven chakras explained

So, what you're saying is that each, Tai Chi Gung, move is designed to open your, chakras, and manipulators of your energy that's beautiful.

Master Lama: It is and one of the reasons that you see it practice outside so much is because they are following through with the original master’s mindset and that means that they know that being outside the energy and the movement next to the intrinsic, chi, of nature, the four basic elements of earth, water, air and fire. Our body is a composite of those four basic elements.

When you examine the first four, chakras, in the body, the, Root Chakra is Earth. The second chakra is water. The solar plexus chakra would be fire, and then of course the air element around the heart center. Then the mind is kind of the fifth element. The throat chakra is the creative and power center. And then of course, we have the sixth chakra is that the root of the nose. And the crown chakra is the forehead.

You actually have five, chakras, but they're outside the physical body. And the only way to really get them activated is you have to harmonize the other, seven chakras. Now the neat thing about the, seven chakras, and this is one of the most powerful physical impacts the system has to people over a short period of time is they correspond with the endocrine gland system. So, the fifth chakra, we know we have our thyroid, right, and then the fourth chakra and of course we have our thymus gland.

How the Kundalini energy harmonizes mind body spirit

So, when you go through for activation of the, Kundalini, as they refer to in India, Master Rabbi Jesus is how we refer to Jesus in the monastery. He referred to it as second birth. He said, you’re born of the water of a woman. But then again, you need to be born of the fire of the father.

And he said in order for us to really understand God's way and God's law we needed to get on the other side of this birth. Tai Chi Gung, was designed to help activate that and also keep it very balanced as a person goes through this transformation to, mind body spirit.. So, it's a real beautiful thing.

Myrna: Yes, you know, I love the, Kundalini, I practice that, meditation, because I like it. I practice it is like the, Kundalini, is like a snake coiled up at the bottom of your, root chakra. When you work the energy, you move it up your spine to harmonize, mind body spirit.

When you talk about your, energy body, is outside of us seven feet, and if it's healthy, you can propel it to 10 or 12 feet. When I'm walking, I'm aware of that as well because that's also your, soul, right?

The soul explained

Master Lama: Well, your, soul, is housed deep down inside your body. The beautiful thing our explanation for the, soul, is as we know that when a mother is early pregnant, the, soul, actually enters the body of the expectant mother and the fetus during simultaneously when that baby moves that first time which is usually about halfway through pregnancy.

So, but the first meridian that said there we call the, fetus meridian, which an acupuncture physician, they say, going up the spine as the Governing Vessel coming down the front of the bodies, that conceptional vessel, and that's one of the keys that we use to balance the, Kundalini.

Because from time to time, people have opened sometimes prematurely the, Kundalini, and maybe they start to get side effects. Headaches are very common. For if the, Kundalini, is getting stuff, for example, the energy in the head. So, the idea of, Tai Chi Gong, is our movements, keep the, chakras, balanced and the, mind body spirit, harmonized so that the, Kundalini energy, moves through.  So, when the, soul, enters at the beginning of life it's like this.

Think of rock going across the water or electrical surge in the body and what you notice about the expectant mother is you can see her one day before, soul, makes entry. And you will see a different continent on her face, and the light in her eyes is intensified because now you have the president of the second, soul,

Myrna: That's amazing. All right. Well, I was told from one of these books or whatever, that the, soul, goes in and out your body and it comes in front of you.

Mind body spirit and the soul

Master Lama: It has the ability to do it. The tendency is that it's rooted normally, initially, right behind the sternum, in the body. That's why when things happen, people say they feel pressure there, you know, and stuff gets routed there and what happens as you go through the other side of the, Kundalini, transformation, or what Christ referred to as second birth, now, actually more of the, soul, than ever before can occupy the body. And what happens is it pushes its, energy body, out and those meridians that acupuncture physician, used to treat primarily inside the physical body also begin to now exceed beyond the physical body.

If I grab the Florida orange and peeled it back, I would see a membrane around the orange right? Well, that membrane now feels your, energy body, and so does those pressure points and meridians. So now you have the ability to connect and influence energy patterns, and harmonize the, mind body spirit, much further distance.

This is very powerful because if you're needing to send out healing energy to someone, you're projecting yourself, part of yourself a master can project all their self if need be. And this is when Jesus makes the reference. So is one born of the Spirit. He is talking about the, mind body and spirit. He says where the wind comes from and where it does what we know not. So is one born of the spiritual, and he makes reference to the, mind body spirit, which is the ancient India through the laming experience.

Myrna: Thank you for that explanation. I had a little bit of information but not the whole picture.

Can the energy body activate our stem cells?

I want to touch on something before we move on to the, circle of life. You mentioned that we can activate our own, stem cells. So can you explain, I'm pretty sure it has to do something about this energy and the, chakras. Can someone do that with, Tai Chi Gong?

Master Lama: Yes as you go in to the, Kundalini, experience, and you go into trance formation, you're going to start to turn them on. And the analogy basically, that's going on inside us miRNAs if I'm in a residential house, I know the electricity grid runs like 110. But if I go into commercial grade, it's like 220. And so, the surge of electricity is totally different.

As we're going through the second birth, they're going from 110 as a human being into 220 wattages right. And we're getting our lights in our cells in our body turned on. There is a switch that has been thrown now. It's partially activated by the, chakras, and it's partially activated by the endocrine gland system itself.

So, one of the things that, Tai Chi Gong, does, as it is designed to strengthen the, energy body, first. Balance the, chakras, open those spokes connecting,  mind body spirit.  Now once that's in place, then the energy starts to go into the different systems of the body. Obviously, the respiratory and the, nervous system, which are closely linked to the, meridian system, is first activated, but as you examine, then all of a sudden, the circulatory system gets benefit.

What is meridian system in the body?
The simplest definition is that a meridian is an energetic highway in the human body. Meridians allow for the flow of energy, known as Qi (pronounced “chee”), to circulate throughout the body. Meridians exist in corresponding pairs and each meridian has multiple acupuncture points along the pathway.

Then the muscles start to get benefit eventually, it goes down into the bones, eventually all the way into the Mara of the bones itself.

When that happens, well, you know, when you think of a disease like leukemia, leukemia is the opposite of regenerating bone marrow is actually the depletion of that so imagine that you could practice it art, strengthen your, auto immune system, to the point to regenerate bone marrow, and then you'll understand how profound we're talking about.

When the energy body becomes activated

What we've observed is the humans today came in and were introduced to a system like, Tai Chi Gung, early, what should be happening Myrna is when a child reaches the natural age of puberty he should be introduced to the, energy body; but instead, the child does a lot of things.  We do poor diet, do not exercise, negative thinking, not breathing correctly, very little oxygen, all the things that are the opposite of what I teach in my first book, called “The Circle of Life.

My, energy body, was not activated for until after I went through surgery. And then I got into martial arts and, yoga, leading up to me meeting my teacher in physical form and fortunately for me, got activated within a year or two after that. I found out later all the way into second birth as I developed more of my martial arts skills, it increased my speed and increased my stamina.

And really, it did amazing things for my mental focus. Just absolutely. I remember before then, when I was trying to pick up dance choreography. It would take me a while, but all of a sudden introduction to, Tai Chi Gong, and I remember I was picking up dance steps and choreography just like, that was amazing.

Harmonizing mind body spirit and money

Myrna: Okay, so that's amazing. Well, thank you for that. All right. So, tell us about your company, the circle of life. And how do you help your students’ overcome challenges.

Master Lama: So, money depending on how you look at, there are many different forms of, money. So, we have the dollar bill. And then we have the precious metals. And also, we have to first start to see, money, is energy itself. The moment we start to understand that products, goods and services are exchanged for something and then that transmutation or transformation, oftentimes, it's a different form of energy. As a matter of fact, that is today the world's like, okay, so what should I invest in?

When we were growing up, our parents would tell us, you know, own land because there's only so much out of it, right? When you think about it, that makes a lot of sense, but that also means the Earth has an intrinsic value that paper money doesn't have, so they vibrate the different frequency, right? Well, let's take precious metals, gold and silver. The things that have been trends of value, what it's telling me if I was to move forward with my life over the next 10 years, I would probably want to own some property.

I would probably want to own some silver and some gold and if I had, I had an affinity toward precious jewels, emeralds, diamond say these are all intrinsically value by the Divine because he only made so much. Also, there is so many we teach people you know, one of the things that begins to happen is the exercise start to really balance both hemispheres of the brain burner. So, your creative and your analytical side, all of a sudden start to come together.

Circle of Life 45 day challenge

We teach people to get a little spiral notebook, go to the dollar store. And begin to put that by where they practice. And it's amazing the creative ideas that come up. We also have this document they can download. On the website rasaji.com is called the column exercise and the column exercise, a little exercise that you can use to help you determine, Okay, maybe I want to create a nurse what that business look like, and how would I connect to that business? Maybe I want to make an investment. Maybe I'm looking for my soulmate. How would I really strategically energetically go about finding that person? How do I harmonize, mind body spirit?

So, this column exercise that they download after they start our 45 Day Challenge, which is absolutely free. They can go to rasaji.com The Circle of Life and they can click on 45 Day Challenge. All they have to give us is an email address. That's it, then the videos that support the challenge all the documents come to them. And all they're required to do is commit to about 20 to 40 minutes a day. One other thing we asked them to do makes them experience more powerful and that is saying no to negative input over the next 45 days.

They can read the testimonies on the site Myrna of people that are anywhere from maybe 145 Day Challenge to as many as five or six of them already.

How Ava became a breathwork teacher

Ava: I grew up in a very affluent area. I was born in Santa Monica, California, one of the boroughs  in LA and moved about second or third grade to Ventura County Calabasas Westlake area. I always give the example of Calabasas is where the Kardashians live. My family was  middle class, but a lot of my friends had lots of money. And so by the time my mom separated from my stepdad which I'm still so proud of her to this day for doing that,  we are unable to pay for the basic basic needs, like a roof over our head, food on the table.

My little sister is nine years younger than me and has autism and after she was diagnosed with autism, my mom did everything in her power to support her and to be near her. Unfortunately, my mom wasn't even able to get a full time job or a regular job because my sister needed to be on call for my sister. She's her primary caretaker so the only option really for her at that point was to work at the school. Being in close proximity to my sister and you know, really makes her life revolve around my sister.

My mom's car was repossessed, she would go to the church every other weekend, the Food Bank and pick up groceries for us and we spent a little over a year between couch surfing on friends' couches, families, couches, neighbors. And after about a year and a half my mom finally was able to scrounge up enough money to get us our own apartment and it was this dingy dark little apartment, but it was ours. And throughout that whole experience, I really am grateful that I was surrounded by so much wealth because it showed me that there was another way.

I feel so deeply for communities where it's only poverty because sometimes that can create this identification of this is all that there will ever be for me. And so I'm grateful that I got to see two different sides of circumstance so that I could say, this is the direction I want to go. That experience created this deep hustle mentality within me of continuing to climb and climb and climb until I felt safe.

And it wasn't until the past few years that as my business started becoming more and more successful, I realized that there was no dollar amount that would ever make me feel safe and safety was an inside job that I had to create within myself. And that's really where, breathwork and meditation, have had the biggest impact on my life, is learning how to create safety within myself.

Using meditation as a personal development tool

Myrna: That's a powerful story. I love that, because I was born poor in Guyana, but I had a very rich godfather who also showed me the other side.  How did you learn, meditation?

Ava: So I was working in a corporate job at the time I worked at this agency in San Diego in the marketing department and was so stressed out, it was a startup.  I was working anywhere between like eight to 10 hours every day.  I was in before the boss out after the boss and literally had dreams about my work. I was no fun to be around. A girlfriend invited me to a, yoga,  class for, personal development, and, stress relief, and the, yoga instructor, taught me, how to use  breathwork,  and, meditation. as, personal growth, tools.

I remember being in a, breathwork meditation, class for the first time,  just dripping in sweat and feeling so good.  And so from there I  became a little obsessed about, breathwork meditation. So I enrolled in, yoga,  teacher training about six months later.  And a lot of anger would come up in training, which is now I know just repressed emotions leaving my body, but my first weekend in our, yoga, teacher training, we had someone come in and do a full, breathwork,  session with us. It was Wim Hof, which is a more modern take on older ancient practices that stem from the Himalayas.

Find you bliss with breathwork meditation

I remember leaving class that day and just calling my friend and letting her know oh my goodness. This feels incredible, I found my bliss. So from that point forward, I aggressively trained in, breathwork meditation. I saw that there were a lot of amazing things coming from teacher training and also a lot of gaps that could be filled in order to support people that had these missions.  And so that's really where the inspiration for the Academy of Breath came from.

Myrna: What is the neuroscience behind, breathwork meditation, that makes you feel so blissful?

Ava: I like approaching the science from two different angles. I love the mysticism behind, breathwork. I love the spiritual approach to it and I also love the science. So in the same way that if you are with a group of individuals and you're all singing together. This energy that you can feel this, this opening that's happening that is almost intangible to describe with words, but you can feel that heightened level of bliss. There's that kind of element of, breathwork, that comes up.

I can't really explain this through my words, but you must experience it, in order to really feel what I'm talking about. So, with, breathwork, what I found was that, through this practice, I could feel my body softening and opening and calling almost all aspects of myself to the present moment where I was no longer time traveling between what had happened in the past or my anxiety and worrying predictions of what was happening in the future.

Transform Your Mind Podcast Player FM
Transform Your Mind Podcast Player FM

The neuroscience behind breathwork meditation

Now, that's not necessarily something that we can prove with science, but that is something that you experience when you're practicing various, breathwork, techniques whether it be a calming technique that's really slowing the body down, slowing the, nervous system, down or more energizing techniques that's actually creating more of a movement and momentum within yourself.

You can experience that type of surrender, that type of fullness or oneness with all of these different, breathwork, practices and quite quickly as well.  You can do three rounds within two to three minutes and start to feel that sense of relief. Which is really powerful. And then on the other side of it when we look at the science behind, breathwork meditation.

In the same way that singing turns on the, vagus nerve, which is responsible for your, parasympathetic,  response in the body. Breathwork, as well turns on the, parasympathetic response.

So basically, the way that I explain it is that the, vagus nerve, is like pumping the brakes on your stress response or, sympathetic nervous system.  We're not necessarily humming or vibrating the vocal cords to activate the, vagus nerve, but there's different practices like for example a, box breath, or equal ratio breath where the, parasympathetic  nervous system, is being activated through slowing down your breath and essentially telling your body and telling your, nervous system.

It's safe for me to relax, it's safe to let go. And when we're doing that, we're releasing happy chemicals throughout the body like, dopamine, and, serotonin, which are all those feel good hormones, and so that's where the bliss comes.

Podfriend Transform Your Mind Podcast
Podfriend Transform Your Mind Podcast

Meditation stimulates the nervous system

Myrna: I told you,  I learn something new every time I interview someone. I've never heard that you can relax your, vagus nerve, by singing. I understand now why some, meditations,  do the chanting. I myself do the, box breath,  with my, meditation, where you inhale for four,  hold for 4 and then exhale for 5.

Ava: Most people don't realize that our breath can be used as medicine. So when someone goes into a really advanced, breathwork, practice,  like a Wim Hof practice,  all of those practices are amazing. They all serve their purpose. However, if we're working with somebody who struggles with PTSD or struggles with anxiety or struggles with depression, we want to be really clear about what, breathwork, practices we are using and the equal ratio breath or the, box breath, or the style that you had mentioned.

So when I teach it, I teach 5-5-5-5,  box breath.  You can absolutely elongate the exhale, because it does help with the, vagus nerve, being stimulated. But that's like the easiest practice for anybody to start with to reacquaint themselves with their, breath. To reestablish a relationship with their breath where they're more mindful about when they're breathing, because we know that anything that we do in the 10 minutes that we're sitting down, or five minutes that we're sitting down, we're going to become more aware of in the rest of the time during our day when we're awake.

Transform Your Mind Podcast Addict
Transform Your Mind Podcast Addict

Using the box breath with breathwork meditation

So that's a really, really simple place to start breathing in through your nose for four or five, holding at the top for four or five, scaling for four or five, and then we also hold at the bottom for four or five and that's a way to just strengthen the lungs as well. And the way that is easiest to remember is just an equal basic breathing. So that's how I explained it to individuals who this helps them.

Myrna: Okay, so you're saying that's the simplest, breathwork, . Give us a complicated one.

Ava: Being able to increase your body temperature is a pretty epic tool to have, especially when you're feeling a little chilly. And I think more than anything, it's understanding the breath, and the role that the breath plays on the autonomic nervous system.  It is like the heart beating; it is the immune system. It's our hormones releasing from the body.

It's our digestion, our breath is directly connected to our, autonomic nervous system. And so we can do about that as a way to again move out of that, fight or flight response, where we're just dumping acidic chemicals like cortisol and adrenaline on our body into a, parasympathetic response.

A breathwork technique to reduce hot flashes

Yes, there is actually a really great practice that is so funny. My mom came with me for my bachelorette party a couple years ago and it was so hot and we were walking back from the party to the Airbnb we were staying, and she just got so overheated and she had to sit down.   I was like, Mom, you got to do this, breathwork, practice with me to cool you down.  It works within five minutes.  It's really simple, you curl your tongue like a funnel and inhale through it.  And for anyone who can't curl their tongue up,  you'll just breathe through the teeth.

Myrna: Can you use, breathwork,  to connect to our, higher power?  Because when you go into stillness, you connect with your, higher power, you connect with God. So how do you teach your clients to use, breathwork, to connect to the, higher power, or their higher self?

Myrna: Yeah, that's such a beautiful question. And to be honest, this is where I get them the most like space to explore on their own because I truly believe that we all have a unique relationship to a, higher power, of our own understanding. And so you know, as an example, I know that in a lot of communities, the word of God can trigger them based on religious upbringing. For me, I love the word God if that's my understanding of the, higher power, but I know other people like the word, universe, or my, higher self, or whatever it might be.

And so I need to change the language because I know that God created the, universe.   All those things are just means the same, super consciousness. There is a bunch of labels.

Using Breathwork meditation  to access your higher self

Ava: So the way that I use, breathwork, in with, meditation, is that using, breathwork, first as a tool to really settle our bodies so that again, we're out of that heightened stress response or feeling really tight and closed off.  Breathwork,  allows us to settle into a space of openness and receptivity so much faster.  When we're sitting in stillness and, meditation and you feel that moving energy up and out of the body.

Sometimes that energy might be before in the form of recurring thoughts. that might be something that happened yesterday, something that you have to check off of your to do list etc. we can use, breathwork, as a way to move that energy up and out of the body so that we've actually created enough of a slowing down within the mind. so that when you are meditating, it's so much easier for you to hear your own inner voice or the voice of God or the voice of source in the practice itself.

And so usually what I will do for someone who's like just started, guide them into, breathwork. Then once they're in, meditation, bring them through a list of things that they're grateful for, so that they're really dropping their, heart space,  and then guide them into some sort of, prayer. That, prayer, might be just like asking a certain question of something that they desire guidance around or  wanting to communicate with God.

And then just allowing myself and, breathwork meditation, to be the subject. I think the two practices go together so perfectly and you know, the lens of, yoga, the eight limbs of, yoga, conjures eight limbs of, yoga. Breathwork, comes before, meditation, as a way to prepare the body to sit for longer periods of time so that you can experience God.

The Academy of Breath

Myrna: How can we connect with you and learn, breathwork meditation, an these wonderful things that you're teaching.

Ava: Thank you so much for giving me an opportunity to share. So the Academy of breath offers an eight week online, breathwork, and, meditation, certification program. This is really meant for anybody who is interested in incorporating, breathwork, and, meditation, into their work that they do. We've had  high school teachers go through, therapists go through, we have coaches, yoga teachers, massage therapists, so really anybody who would want to expand their core offering using, breathwork, and, meditation, or wants to become a replica, meditation teacher.

We created this program to really guide you through how to facilitate nine different record practices, three different styles of, meditation, as well as bonus modules and bonus support on how to build a business around it. Again, as I mentioned, when I went through all these trainings, I thought there were phenomenal aspects of the trainings that were more spiritual based or the trainings that were more like science based, but no one really approached like the business side of things either.

Transform your mind PTWWN TV
PTWWN TV – Using Breathwork as a Tool For Personal Growth

I think that's where a lot of teacher trainings fall short is that you give them all of these tools, but then they're like, I don't know what to do with this. And so we really work on that aspect of it as well. If that's something that feels a little bit too, too much or too advanced for those of you that are listening and maybe you're brand new to, breathwork, and, meditation, we also have a six modules for some practice course called backward, where you will learn over the course of six modules how to develop your own personal, breathwork meditation, practice, to help amplify your creativity, your intuition, lower stress levels, and become more present.

And so we really wanted to create a more accessible way for people to learn, breathwork, and, meditation, that might not necessarily be ready to go into a full teacher training. And you can find details for all of that at www.Academyofbreath.org/programs.

How Inner engineering changed my life

Myrna: I guess your journey began when you took, Sadhguru's, Inner Engineering, wellbeing programs. So, can you tell us about that program and why specifically, that led you to change your life? I just read the book “Inner Engineering” So I'm sure that the, the program goes much deeper than the book.

Trent: Definitely, especially into the experiential dimensions of, yoga. So, growing up, I grew up in an interfaith household. So, I always had more questions than answers. I was very intrigued by Eastern ways of thinking from a young age. And when I went to college, I started studying neuroscience. I was going to become a doctor was very interested in psychology and behavior in language. And I thought, Alright, I need to experience, meditation, hands on and my older brother who had the chance to take, Inner Engineering, strongly recommended the program.

So, if you happen to be going to Houston where I was living, to teach, Inner Engineering, and at that time, it was a four-day course, a complete overhaul of, Mind, Body, emotions and energy. So, I thought, Alright, I'm finishing my first year of college. I would love to experience what, meditation, means in its purest form, so I sign up for the, inner engineering, course. And I joke Myrna that I learned more in those four days about the, mind, and human behavior than I did in four years of psychology classes.

Myrna: Wow! I'm impressed.

Let’s talk about what is “professional” today. On LinkedIn, important conversations are happening around what it means to be a professional. As the Host of the Transform Your Mind Podcast being professional means to me being respectful of my guest and their time.

Right now, LinkedIn members are talking about things like needing more flexibility around where we work, how we work, and even taking time away from work to focus on family or mental health.

Because those things should not stunt career development and growth. Instead, they should enhance it as we show up on our own terms.

The Inner Engineering Experience

Trent: Very touching experience, because I found that there wasn't an ounce of dogma in the words, Sadhguru, was simply speaking about life at its core, through his perception as a Realized, yogi, and, mystic.  The way that he spoke about, relationships, about work, about meaning about life, about death, about functioning at your highest, and looking at the human system as a mechanism, really distilling things down to the basics.

Would you like this human machine to work well or not? If you could choose between joy, and misery, which would you choose? And it was just framed in such a pragmatic and compelling way that I couldn't help, but be very deeply touched. And I think the most important part of that four-day experience with, Sadhguru, was learning a 21-minute yogic practice. It's called Shambhavi Mahamudra kriya, which is a simple 21-day practice that involves holding certain postures to prepare the system for, meditation.

And I kid you not, within a few weeks of doing this simple practice, I found myself feeling more connected to nature seeing greener in everything around me when I was when I was in nature and walking through trees, felt a deeper sense of ease.

You know, college can be a tumultuous time and I found that the practice gave me a certain anchor, a certain level of stability and serenity. So, it was a phenomenal boost and it continues to be such an integral part of my life and my wellbeing.

Communicating with nature after inner engineering

Myrna: Wow, that's amazing. You know, it's really interesting. I read the book “Inner Engineering”, after I read the book, I started communicating with trees as I did my daily walk in the park.  I like what you said regarding your studying neuroscience which is all about the workings of the brain. And you know, the brain controls the body and the mind and all that stuff. But yet in four days, you were able to tap into something. And I'm thinking that what happened is that you were able to tap into source energy somehow, which is the universal power. And that's basically what changed you.

That is awesome. And the amazing part of your story, and I'm glad you left it out so they can ask the question. The most amazing part of your story is that after you had that experience, you decided to become a full-time volunteer at the, Isha Foundation. I find that the most fascinating part of our conversation.

Trent: It's was a 10-year journey, I found myself wanting to go deeper.

Who is Sadhguru

Myrna: So, we talked a lot about, Sadhguru. We talked about the, Isha yoga center, but our conversation today is about the, save soil movement, before we go on there. Let's give the listeners some information about, Sadhguru, what his initiatives are, for people that don't know who he is.

Trent: Absolutely, there are many ways of describing, Sadhguru. In simple terms, he is a, yogi, and a visionary. And he's been known over the last four decades for massive initiatives to foster human wellbeing and also global harmony. So, he's implemented large scale projects for environmental restoration.

He has taught, yoga, programs that have touched the lives of millions.  Fundamentally, his mission, as I understand it, is to raise, human consciousness, to allow people to experience the enormity of what it means to be human and moving humanity from a compulsive state of existence to a conscious state of existence.

Transform Your Mind Amazon
Transform Your Mind Amazon

Doing things in a conscious way in a way is conducive for one's growth for one's wellbeing and for the wellbeing of all.  So, over the last 40 years, there are so many different things that, Sadhguru, has designed and implemented to support raising, human consciousness, to support individual wellbeing and growth.  There are social outreach initiatives and healthcare outreach and kind of these basic things that we may not think of as, spiritual, but without them, it's not really reasonable to expect someone to turn inward.

So, without addressing ecology, without addressing education, and of course, the economy allowing people to be economically empowered and to be in a stable situation. These were kind of the fundamental things that, Sadhguru, and the entire, Isha Foundation, has been looking at, so that we can arrive at a state where all of humanity can, use the tools of inner wellbeing.  Use the tools and technologies that allow one to experience their humanity as the miracle and as the blissful phenomenon that is.

What is the save soil movement?

Myrna; It's amazing. Yeah. And as you were speaking, I remember you know, my pastor saying when somebody is hungry, or someone is in need, it is not the time to be telling them things like, meditation, and telling them things like, finding God you've got to satisfy those basic needs.

Now let’s talk about the, save soil movement. I'm a little bit prepared for it because, Sadhguru, had a webinar about a week or so ago, and I listened to it. So, I understand, the basic foundation is that we're depleting the, soil, and its nutrients. So, can you explain, what’s the, save soil movement, is all about and what are its goals?

Trent: Absolutely happy to lay it out. We face a problem on the planet, which is the degradation of, soil, and to answer this, there's a movement called the, save soil movement, which aims to address the looming threat of, soil extinction, and to encourage the policy changes globally needed to restore our, soil. So, this is a campaign that will raise mass awareness as well as show the governments of the world that it is time to create, soil friendly policies, that regenerate our world, soil.

Soil needs 3% organic matter

So, what is the actual problem? Well, the leading world bodies as well as leading, soil scientists, have shared that 62% of the world's agricultural, soil, is already degraded. In the US alone, half of our topsoil has basically been destroyed. It's not farmable. It's not arable. In European nations. The amount of organic content in the, soil, is dropping drastically and when you hit a certain threshold, basically beneath 3% organic matter, the, soil, becomes sand.

And sadly, when we talk about, soil degradation, this is what is happening globally, that you're losing the life that microorganisms, the organic matter that makes, soil, a living entity.  The living substance that it is in India, a country of 1.3 billion people which relies, very heavily on their agriculture, 62% of India's, soil, has less than half a percent of organic matter.

Remember, the magic number is 3%. Beyond 3%, the, soil, becomes sand but with half a percent of organic matter in India soils in the majority of their, soils, you're really creating a situation where the, soil, cannot deliver and create the plants and crops and vegetables and fruit that are needed for life.

This is something when I learned about it, Myrna was absolutely dropped jaw dropping, because you know, we talk a lot about greenhouse emissions we talk about, a rising sea levels and all of these things demand our attention, no doubt, but why have I not heard about, soil?

Why are we not talking about, soil, because almost all of our food on earth comes from our, soil. It is the giver of life. There cannot be any richness in life if we don't have rich, soil. But this issue of organic matter disappearing rapidly from our, soil, doesn't seem to be getting the attention it deserves.

What takes nutrients out of soil

Myrna: So that's awesome. A couple of circle backs, first of all, what is taking the nutrients out of the, soil?

Trent: My understanding having been learning about this for over a year, and I've actually had the privilege of speaking with leading, soil biologists, people who study this, academically and professionally, it is there are multiple pieces, but to simplify it, the practices we're using in our modern era of how to farm play a big role in degrading the, soil, by using chemical fertilizers and pesticides. You are harming the microbial life.

A lot of us don't realize that, a teaspoon of, soil, has billions and billions of microorganisms. Actually, it has more organisms than there are human beings on earth, just a teaspoon of, soil. So, we have this this complex yet fragile ecosystem living within the, soil, how you treat it makes a big difference.

Spraying certain chemicals, using certain fertilizers can make a difference. The practice of, tilling the soil, which is something we've used for centuries, it seems like it's effective. When you till, soil, you're kind of violently uprooting and disturbing the, soil, beneath the surface and this can harm the microorganism life.

Google Podcast Transform Your Mind
Google Podcast Transform Your Mind

Tilling is bad for soil

Tilling, also exposes, soil, to the elements so you have massive amounts of carbon dioxide and methane being released into the air so your, soil, is being harmed and damaged and you're contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, which is really a double whammy. So, if I had to summarize it, it is that our modern industrial farming practices are playing a role in in damaging and destroying the, soils, that we have. Can we change it overnight? No, but should we be aware that these are the problems that we're facing and find solutions to boost the organic matter?

There are so many amazing people in this arena regenerative farmers, policymakers who are aware of the, soil, issue of entire nonprofits and divisions of the UN who recognize that we are heading towards desertification. We're heading towards arid areas where there used to be thriving, soil. This is a part of the planet that we must take steps to save.

Myrna: Yeah, I'm a little bit aware of that, that I don't know if I heard it from, Sadhguru, or somewhere else. A farmer, is using the same soil and I guess as they keep repeating it, it keeps getting less and less of the microorganisms. They're harming it by the pesticides, which they have to because then the bugs, we need up their product. They're harming it by, tilling. But is if we don't stop this degradation of the, soil, is there a way to put it back in?  I remember when I was growing up, we would use cow manure as a fertilizer. Can that work?

How to put back nutrients into the soil

Trent: Yes,  There is something I would just love to share with your audience to learn more about this because the solutions and problems have been known actually, for decades. We're not reinventing anything here, many indigenous cultures and traditions are across the planet for centuries, if not millennia, have had thriving, soil. It's really only recently that we're facing such widespread destruction of our, soil. At conscious planet.org has a wonderful video that we've created to share.  There's a simple video that describes this problem in very simple but scientifically valid ways.

There's also a documentary which was a game changer for me. It's available on Netflix called “Kiss The Ground.” And this is a phenomenal resource that explores in depth, the vital role that, soil, plays in our life as well as, the people who are trying to turn around this crisis. And both on the conscious planet website and this documentary and of course, so many resources that are out there. We will quickly learn that, the bulk of the problems created by our farming practices. And the solution also lies in our farming practices.

What you mentioned about, animal waste, it can be cows, it can be goats, it can be chickens, simply having animals grazing. The land and dropping their waste inoculate a, soil, with organic matter. There's also a very vital and well-known technique called cover crops, where for periods of time you aren't actually farming the land or at least plots of land for, specific harvests. You actually planting different kinds of crops and trees and shrubs that invigorate the, soil, that capture carbon and other nutrients from the atmosphere and embedded into the, soil, which again is a phenomenal thing to address global warming and greenhouse emissions.

These are two examples of many, many practices that are that are great for the, soil, but if we can add more plant matter and animal waste to the, soil, that can bring more organic content. And if you can allow for more and more land to be under shade, where it's not being scorched by the sun and being you know, decertified those are two simple, but very, very powerful practices.

Join the save soil movement

I think joining our, save soil movement, so from March 21, all the way through the end of June, there will be a powerful 100-day journey. Sadhguru, will actually be motorcycling 30,000 kilometers across 27 countries in Europe, Middle East and then finally in India. He is he's 65. This is not something you would expect and it's not a joyride by any means, this is something that he's doing to, wake people up and to very swiftly meet with, leaders in each country.

So, if everyone can be with us for this movement and for this 100 Day epic journey that in itself will prove to be invaluable because, we're going to be amplifying things on social media. We're going to be having, events that take place throughout all the European countries into the Middle East and then India. I would say for now, it's about awareness, education and speaking out. And then very quickly, you'll see this movement evolve into the next phase, which is how do we inspire and encourage the governments of the world to pass these, soil friendly policies.

So, to the citizens of the world, we play a vital role we don't have to solve all of it, but learning and sharing and speaking about it, our hashtag is #savesoil. We're going to be active on virtually every platform. So, following you know, conscious planet on Instagram and Twitter and Facebook. We have YouTube content being translated and dozens of languages that people across the world can learn about this.

Use Hashtag #savesoil to post to social media

#savesoil hashtag and campaign will be a way of connecting all of us and, you can share a video of you connecting with, soil, you can show share a video of talking about the food where did this come from. Why does it so matter? Any small action can translate to a groundswell of people becoming aware of the, save soil movement. And we've actually created a role for this. If you visit the website and press Get involved. We're asking people to sign up to become, Earth buddies. So, I'm an, earth buddy.

To learn more about, Isha Foundation, of the center here in India, it's Isha.sadhguru.org. There's amazing content there daily quotes, all sorts of video content and articles. There's a lot of content there about, soil, since that is, a fundamental way of connecting with nature. And then the, save soil movement, itself will be, catalyzed and unfolding via the conscious planet and, save soil, performance.

Surviving 911

Myrna: How did surviving, 911, on, September 11, change your life?  How did that tragedy make you more receptive to a new spiritual path of, mindfulness, breathwork, and, meditation?

Kushal: Great question. I think, you know, as I recall, the day started as any other day where I was on my way to work. And as I was coming out of the, the subway, in the bowels of the, world trade center, that's when the pandemonium broke around me and I froze. In that moment, I didn't know how to process all that. People were just running around, saying things that they understood, or they perceived, someone was saying a bomb had gone off.

Nobody really knew what was happening. Only one thing was evident, there was a fear, there was massive fear in the atmosphere. That's all I really remember that it was unsafe to be outside.  I stepped out and as I was looking at the building, trying to process what had just happened, another plane crashed into the South Tower. Of course, in that moment, it became clear that this was a more deliberate action.

And what followed after that, people jumping in front of me, just to end it willfully, or the first responders going in, almost walking into their own end, you know, and it was all kind of very unexpected and very difficult to process. It felt like a scene from an apocalypse movie that you can almost imagine, but you never think you would be part of it, or you would be living it. And as I was running away from it, the second tower just collapsed. And by a stroke of luck, I had just jumped on a ferry on the other end of the island that was leaving Manhattan.

I ended up being the last person on the last ferry that left the island that day. At that moment, I realized that I turned into a statistic, that I was now a, 911 survivor. And, you know, that day kind of prepared me and laid a foundation for what was to come in my life. Part of me was feeling very grateful, very happy that I had, I made it out alive, and I survived these horrific attacks.

Finding purpose as a survivor of 911

So, there was an enthusiasm to finish the unfinished business. I used to work on Wall Street now, that American dream that I have come to pursue as an immigrant, I had to go out and create a new dream. An event like this was a wakeup call to find, purpose in life.  It was something that shook me up from my reverie and made me ask a bigger question.  What is my, purpose in life?

This was a life changing event, I talked to many people and I say maybe, 911, was an event for me, but I feel everyone has their own, 911.  Whether they were when their world crashed. It was that day 20 years ago before a pandemic like what we've just been through?

Myrna: Yes, we all we all walk away from something.  So, you weren't at work yet when the planes crashed into the, world trade center? You were just coming out of the subway. Obviously, it wasn't your time. Were you running late for work? Were you supposed to be at work on time?

Making the decision to Go

Kushal: No, the security person was asking us to go back in the building. Because, if you stepped outside, just on the other side of that glass door, it was raining cement chips, that insulation from the wall that glass splinters, embers from the sky, it was like really unsafe. And so, he was asking people to stay inside, but in that moment, I decided to step out and go.  A voice from behind me tap on my shoulder and say, Just go. And so yeah, that was my clothes in the dryer moment, because the building collapsed a few minutes later.

The aftermath of 911

After, September 11, I think I can paint a broad brush and what I had was, depression. I think, depression, follows lack of interest, but for me, it was it was exactly the opposite. I was feeling so grateful that I had a second lease on life.  That I felt I had to go after whatever was unfinished with even more gusto. I have tremendous force of life in me. It's just that I began questioning the, purpose of life, what's really the point of this life. I was I was doing well in my career. I got married to my soulmate but what was my, purpose in life?

So, I wouldn't really call it depression, but it was just, sometimes you are on autopilot. You're on a conveyor belt, and you were just going with the force of life and then something hits you with a club in your head and makes you question is this conveyor belt right for you? That was the first time I questioned my, purpose in life.

Breathwork meditation

Myrna: All right, you found your, purpose, by going to a, breathwork, workshop and, breathwork, meditation, and that started your decades long journey in spiritual discovery. So why do you feel that proper breathing was so important to healing trauma? I don't know if you felt that you were traumatized from that, but if we don't want to use the word, trauma, why do you think that, breathwork, is so important to healing?

Kushal: I must confess that in the spirit of being very open and honest, that I did not go to that, breathwork, meditation, looking for, purpose. I was almost pushed into it against all my reluctance.

And so, the first time I meditated with, breathwork, with this teacher, this spiritual master, I was blown away. I had read all about keeping your mind in the, present moment, not thinking of the past or future just being in the, present moment.  It was a fantastic, very well-read intellectual concept, lodged firmly in my head. But the first time did, breathwork, meditation, it became a tangible experience.  That what it is to be in the, present moment, or what it is to have a mind without thoughts, or mind without an impulse. And that was the first time I experienced that.

Myrna: That is amazing, because most people take time to get there.

Kushal: I personally had tried it so many times before, and it didn't go anywhere. I want to come to that, why that was the case. This time, I effortlessly got there. So, then I started looking for scientific validation. That left-brain person that I was, I started looking for all the scientific underpinnings of that practice, or that, breathwork, meditation, that I experienced. And then I realized that it was real deal.

Balancing Right Brain and Left Brain

I think the balance of both, left brain, and, right brain, is important. I think that brain is logic, analysis. Intensity, right brain, is more flow state, you know, calm music, you know, all of that emotion. So, I think a balance of both a judicious balance of both is very important. Either end of the spectrum, you somewhat lead an unbalanced life. And you want to, I think you want to be walking the razor's edge balances boredom.

Myrna: Why do you think that proper breathing aka, breathwork, heals your, trauma?  Does it have to do with being in the, present moment, is that the doorway?

Kushal: There's a deeper scientific kind of effect that's happening on our nervous system. You know, any life experience that you go through, whether it's pleasant or unpleasant, it leaves a lesion or a scuff mark on your nervous system. It leaves like a, an impression in your system somewhere. Let me give you an example of something so simple as wanting to have a coffee in the morning.

First day, somebody offered you a cup of coffee in the morning, oh, you say it is the greatest thing. And next day, when you look at coffee, you remember the experience you had before. And you say, I want coffee. Third day, you are going to go and switch on the coffee pot. And the next day, if you don't have coffee in your apartment, that's going to make you feel miserable.

Sky breath meditation

So something as innocent as a coffee has created a pattern, or a conditioning of your mind. Some of the traumatic events, or some of the events of loss or anything of that nature does a very similar thing. Seeing something similar that evokes that emotion, keeps taking you back to that emotion. You know, for the, for the longest time, every time I would remove my shoes at the airport, it would take me back to the morning of, 911.

That was an impression that, 911, had created in my mind, and now, any such related events, were taking them back to past, not letting me be in more in the, present moment.

The practice that I learned, this technique is called, Sky breath meditation. And what, sky breath meditation, does is harnessing the rhythm of your own, breath. It clears your nervous system of this debilitating impression. Impressions that hold you back, impressions that take you back into those moments that you don't want to go back to.

So, the impressions make us, tied to our pass. So, what I experienced with, sky breath, was without effort.

You said a very beautiful thing earlier that I want to comment on, you said that you required visualization to move from, left brain, thinking to, right brain, thinking. Visualization, is an effort. Yes, not thinking of something or resisting thoughts is an effort. And as you know someone who is focused so much on, transforming the mind. You can't control your mind from the level of your own mind.

Using breathwork meditation to calm the mind

Myrna: Exactly. You got it. You know, that's the nature of the, mind. You cannot control it with your thoughts. Mind, does not subscribe, doesn't listen to effort. Your body listens to effort. If you want to build muscles, you have to put effort, but, sky breath, is complete effortless.

Kushal: So, what this, chi breath, did was without effort, it cleared my impressions and effortlessly took my mind to a place which was meditative. I had I tried so hard to meditate but when I closed my eyes all the profound ideas about what I wanted to have for dinner, all these trivial things which entered my awareness to the point that I cannot meditate.  But now, sky breath meditation, changed all that through the simple act of, breathwork breathing.

What is Ayurveda

Myrna: All right, awesome. All right. Now, you also talk about, Ayurveda, what exactly is that?

Kushal: Ayurveda, is just science of life. It's also colloquially known as the sister science to, yoga.  Yoga, focuses on body and mind. Ayurveda, focuses on nutrition, what you put inside your system. So, it focuses on achieving harmony, and balance, through your food, your food is your medicine. But unlike a lot of the trends these days, eg. keto or, paleo where you do certain things, and you definitely don't do certain things, Ayurveda, is not restrictive.

Myrna: I don't know why I have not actually investigated, Ayurveda, because Deepak Chopra and Sadhguru teaches about, Ayurveda.

Kushal: Ayurveda, has to do with the planet, it has to do with how we work with the seasons, it has to do with the time of the day.  It's all about bringing that balance, bringing that harmony in your system, through eating right at the right time, in the right amount. I realized that as I went deeper into my practice of, meditation, my nutrition automatically started aligning, aligning with what I recommended.

Okay, and it was very beautiful, it didn't say, do this, don't do this, it was never about that. And the minute someone says, don’t do this, I want to do that. So that's why, Ayurveda, really resonated with me, because it said, do everything, just do it in the right amount at the right time. And mindfulness is about being aware, being mindful of what you do and eat.

Sky breath meditation and mindfulness

If you look at it scientifically, mindfulness, is a frontal cortex activity in your brain. And the research shows those people who practice, mindfulness, their frontal cortex is more developed. It is the thinking side of the brain. Mindfulness, keeps you at the surface level.

You turn off your mind, without effort. Turning off also requires effort. So, meditation, is not an act of doing anything but it's just being and then you are in that state. You connect with yourself and, meditation, happen.

Use a tool like, Sky breath, or some, breathwork, techniques allows you to connect with yourself and the more you are in touch with yourself, the more resilient you automatically become. The more aware you are at every moment, the more what is important and what is not becomes very clear. So, you may have these memories, like for example, if you like how you asked me earlier, take us to that day, 911, 2011   I can close my eyes and I can see every little detail in crystal clarity, but does it does not have the same emotional garbage or that negative charge that it used to have.

How to Play to Win with the Cards you are Dealt in Life

We should, play to win. I wrote the book “Out of the Snares, a story of Hope and Encouragement” with the intention of drawing, life lessons, from various aspects of my Life and how I, played to win.  For example the first life event that I introduced in my book is as a victim of childhood, sexual abuse, and being born into, poverty.

The, life lesson, I share here is that of the, victim mentality.

You don't have to be a, victim, in life; instead become a player.

Just like in the game of blackjack, if the dealer is showing a picture card and you only have small cards, you don't chuck your hand in and say there's no way that I can win.
You must, play to win. All you need is the intention to win and guess what, your hand is going to get better.

Quitters Never Win and Winners Never Quit

Here is a short excerpt from my book:

Out of the Snares a story of hope and encouragement

Intro How to Play to Win – My story

I was born into a family with nothing, my mother and grandmother were both domestic servants. My dad was in Teachers College and did not know his real father. He lived with his mom and stepfather who was an alcoholic. In 1959 Guyana was a British colony of England.
Just like England colonized India and took all the wealth out of India, in a similar way England took all of Guyana’s resources out of the country.
Most of the Blacks and Indians were living in, poverty. My mom and grandmother worked for white English folk.

As a child I was always fed and had clothes and shoes to wear. My mom and grandmother both made our clothes.
So, it was understandable that I would be drawn to my godfather, who was a wealthy man with several houses, several cars and a corner shop filled with snacks and chocolate bars. Mr. Clark as I will call him took a liking to me beyond that of a Godfather and treated me like his grandchild.

I spent a lot of time at his house. He took me out with his family every weekend and really showered me with things.
He gave me food, gold chains and gold bracelets, he was also a goldsmith. I ended up sleeping over at his house several times per week and playing with his grandchildren. He used to like to bounce me on his knee with his legs massaging my private parts.

One day my memory recalls, I was about five years old, he braced me up against the wall and caressed my body. As I got older the, sexual abuse, became more intimate.
He would rub my legs whenever I was close. His favorite was the feeling me up in the front seat of his car while driving me to school.

His hand would be under my skirt fingering my private parts. I was sure that people in other cars could see this, sexual abuse, but he said they could not.
This, childhood sexual abuse,  continued for several years until one day he took me behind his shop and took my virginity with his fingers.

I didn't tell anyone I'm not sure why. I do remember thinking that I loved him so much and wanted to die before he did.

Mr. Clark started getting a reputation for liking little girls and my dad asked me one day if Mr. Clark ever, sexual abused, me, I lied and said he had not.

I'm going to skip a couple of paragraphs, I don't want to get into the nitty-gritty details here.
I'm going to read to you now my conclusion of this chapter.

Play to Win by collapsing your consciousness

How did I, play to win? Looking back, if I were to collapse my consciousness and become the observer in this experience, I would say that at some subconscious level I knew what we were doing was wrong. I knew that I was being, sexually abused.
I'm not sure why I chose to keep it a secret.

Research shows that children of, childhood sexual abuse, never tell, they become ashamed and feel that they are to blame. I know I have always felt shamed. It took me a very, very, long time to share my story. Writing this book was my way of coming into the light and putting the devil on notice that I will no longer let guilt and shame be a part of my life.

That was my introduction to my book.
Pick up a copy to read the full story.

Playing to Win Using CANI

I have, played to win,  the, sexual abuse, card and, poverty, by concentrating on, CANI. Constant and Never Ending Improvement.
They say that the secret to happiness is always moving towards a goal and that is how I, play to win.

It is wonderful that we're meeting today in a library because I have always been a reader.
Reading books is how you, play to win!

Tony Robbins is now a billionaire because he made himself read 700 books per year and those books taught him everything he knows.
Pat Riley of the Miami Heat said

“If you're not growing, you are dying”

Play to win using vibrational frequency

The second way I have, played to win, with the cards I have been dealt was to become conscious of my vibrational frequency.
I learned that later in life before I wrote my first book
“Becoming Conscious, my awakening”

I started understanding my vibrations. You see whenever somebody does something to us, we feel bad and what happens when we feel bad?
We attract more of the same. We always say bad things comes in three’s, that is because you are attracting them to you.
So when you're in a funk you have to find some way to make yourself feel better, and one of the ways I do that is to always live in gratitude.
Because regardless of what's going on in your life, there's always something that you can be grateful for. Breath, sight, food in your fridge, etc.
So, find some gratitude and feel that energy release a positive force that reverses all the bad in your life!

Survivors of, sexual abuse, don't owe anyone our stories. Here's why I'm telling mine, MeToo

Genese Vertus Playing to Win

In 2009 at the age of 33 Genese became CEO and founder of Passion Rescue Mission and reopened the Genecoit Vertus School of Excellence in Francois, Haiti providing tuition free education and serving over 225 students.

Genese How Have you played with the cards you were dealt in Life?
Winning has to less with the cards you have in your hand and more to do with how you play the game.

You have to, play to win.

How did I, play to win? I was born in one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, which is Haiti.

The goal is to win no matter what seven piece of dominoes or cards you have in your hand.

Kenny Rogers sings a song that says

“You have to know when to Hold and when to Fold”

Three simple things helped me play with my cards.
1. My faith in God
2. Pursuit of an education
3. A strong support system

I was fortunate enough to come to this great country to get an education and in 2009 I returned back to Haiti and reopened a school that my father built. We started with 189
students at that time currently we have 225 students getting a tuition-free education in one of the poorest, mountainous, villages in Haiti, which is Francois Haiti. We provide meals, we provide school supplies we provide uniforms and we have 12 teachers that are employed.

I have a waiting list of over 300 students wanting to get into that school right now; so it's not enough To, play to win, we must give back. Once you get to where you need to be, you need to
reach back and help your people.

Jenny – I have had some good cards. But there are some cards we cannot choose. We cannot chose our Father we cannot choose our Mother or our relatives.
I was born and raised in China in a very traditional family. I don't have trauma in my life, my parents are very lovely and educated; but there's one thing that we never agreed on. When I got married I never thought I wanted children.

I don't know how many of you are natural parents; but I was not one of them. When I was at 34 years old my father called me from China had a big argument with me. He wanted to have a grandchild. So, How did I, play to win? I chose to honor my father’s request because family is important to me.

Now eight years later, people ask me what was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life? And I say “To have a child” My son has brought me so much joy, so much wonderful
things to my life that I have never ever thought that I would have.

The second card everyone has, but they also cannot chose is
Passion and purpose.

The 3rd card we are dealt is  Health. The most important thing for everybody is good health. I decided to take the journey of being a, Yoga Instructor, and a Health Coach.

I learned we can become happy by changing how we move our bodies. Yoga, encourages us to think about our health.
No matter how busy you are, no matter how much outside achievement you have, by the end of the day you have to take time for yourself.
