Entrepreneur Mindset: Maintaining a Positive Attitude

In “Life of a Young Entrepreneur,” the author shares her remarkable journey of overcoming challenges and developing an, entrepreneur mindset. One key turning point in her path was when she arrived in the United States with only $40 to her name. Despite the setback of a promised job falling through, Sasha didn't give up. Instead, she learned how to braid hair and started selling her services to earn money. She then used her earnings to buy groceries and cooked food to sell at a flea market, ultimately making $450. This experience taught Sasha the importance of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

Connecting to your spirit guides

Myrna: When did you first learn you were a, psychic medium?

Marilyn: After the columbine murders, I woke up to find the kid who did the killing were at the end of my bed. And I thought that it was my imagination. I thought I was just traumatized by the event. I don't watch the news, but that particular day I was watching the news. I was living in Manhattan at the time and then a year later, 911 happened and I woke up and the pilots were at the end of my bed and they had blood dripping down their faces. It sounds crazy, but that is what I saw. And then from then it just accelerated.

I started getting locked in rooms. I started hearing my name called, I started seeing spirits all the time. I moved to LA soon after that because I didn't want to be in New York anymore. And I went to see a, psychic, and I told her what was happening to me. And she said the dead are trying to reach you, you need to see a, psychic medium. So, I picked a, medium, out of a magazine and I went to see her.  As soon as she walked into the room and she said you are a, medium, without knowing anything about me.

After that the floodgates opened. I had to learn how to work with it. Because it really scared me. I do talk a lot about my experiences as a, psychic medium, on my podcast. Who can it be now.

A Psychic Medium helps people connect to deceased family members

Myrna: There's a movie called “The Sixth Sense” and the kid says “I see dead people.” So, you see dead people, but our conversation today is about, soul guides. So how do we make the bridge from seeing dead people to having a, soul guide, because a, soul guide, is different from someone who's dead correct?

Marilyn: Yeah, it's definitely a different experience. Although you can have a deceased one as a, spirit guide, or a, soul guide.  Through my process of working with this gift, I met different people and one of them was a therapist who knew how to work with, mediums. I was in her office one day and I felt something leaning on me, it was leaning on me for quite some time and I knew enough to trust the experience and I said to her, something's leaning on me. And she said, close your eyes and tell me what it is. And I closed my eyes and I just started channeling right away.

I had no idea what, spirit guides, were I didn't know really what, soul guides, were, I knew a little bit about angels since I come from the Catholicism. So, angels and saints were big for me. And so I went home and I started working with this one particular, spirit guide, and he started teaching me about all these other, spirit guides, and how to open up my gifts.

What are Spirit Guides

Myrna: What is the purpose of a, spirit guide?

Marilyn: I have more than one or two, spirit guides, I have a bunch. I'm not gonna say how many because it's a very intimate connection for me. But you can also you can have, spirit guides, in specific areas like I have a, spirit guide, for love. I had a marketing guide for a while he was amazing, you know I have a philosophy guide, these are all, spirit guides.

So yeah, you can have a, spirit guide, for business as well and here's the beauty of it. You could admire somebody's business who's deceased. And you could say hey, I want to work with Coco Chanel. And you'll feel a full on yes with that. And Coco Chanel can come in and start helping you out or Steve Job, it doesn't matter. So, soul guides, can be anything and they can help us in all arenas. And then there's teachers, which is a little bit different. Teachers are experts in areas and they only come in for a short period of time to help you through a specific phase of your life.

Spirit guides, will go in and out too. But I think there are certain, spirit guides, that are with me, that will probably be with me till the end.

Spirit guides could be deceased loved ones

Myrna: So you have a lot, spirit  guides, because you're a, medium, and you can communicate with them. That's probably why they're there. Most people don't know how to communicate with their, spirit guides. I went to a, psychic, maybe 20 years 30 years ago and she told me that I have two people sitting on my shoulder.  I'm thinking maybe it's my grandma or someone else. So my question is, is your, spirit guide, a loved one?

Marilyn: So here's my answer to that. First of all you I do feel you have a female and a male, spirit guides, on your shoulders.  I feel like there's definitely a grandmother ancestral energy with you. But I also feel like it goes deeper than that because there's a lineage of your breaking patterns and habits and you're bringing in incredible infinite wisdom to the masses. Like you are a voice of so many women behind you, who have always been a voice, but kind of like a whispering voice because they didn't have the platform to speak it out loud.

But you are now being you've given yourself permission. Your, spirit guides, are clapping and applauding you along to bring that message out to millions. And it's also about your heritage and your story. You being a face not only for, women of color, that's really important, but it's also women in general. And, spirit, says please do not deny the men that may resonate with your story as well as anybody who's felt like they were put down or trampled on before.

And then there is a man, spirit guide,  behind you as well. I feel like there might be more to and this, I a picking up the, cathodic spiritual realm. It's like a, St. Anthony. It's like an energy like that. It's a very specific type of holy energy. I'm getting pain in my shoulders with you as well. But it's not a burden. It's not meant to feel like a burden for you. It's meant to feel like it's light. I feel like the people before you have maybe felt burdened by this and they want you to know that you are being lifted. This is an incredible way for you to bring this out into the world.

Soul guides could be an Archangel or Jesus

So with that said, I honestly believe that, guides, can be anything; they can be ascended masters, they can be angels, they can be Jesus. It's what resonates for you. People love, Archangel Michael, it could be, Archangel Michael, I love, Jesus, but, Jesus, isn't one of my, guides, but I still love, Jesus. You know, it could be a deceased loved one. It could be an angel being from another planet you've never met.

I'm actually starting to do, psychic readings, again for people because I stopped doing them for a long time because I wanted people to stop being dependent on my word. But I believe that these, soul guides, are here to help us to tap into the infinite wisdom of our, soul. And they're also a direct reflection of our, soul. We're helping them as much as they're helping us. So that's I'm gonna leave you with that answer. Have you written a book or are you writing a book because you're supposed to be writing a book?

A Psychic medium communicates with dead people

Myrna: I written 3 books. One of them is titled “Out of the Snares, a story of hope and encouragement.”  Boy, I'm connecting with you. I'm getting all these chills and goosebumps everywhere. Thank you for that confirmation. I live a charmed life and and I know that I'm receiving guidance from my, soul guides,  someone was guiding me. So thank you for that. I love that. Yeah.

As a psychic medium, you help your clients connect with their, soul guides. How do you help them do that?

Marilyn:  So I like to teach people how they see, hear, feel ,sense ,and know on their own. So they can develop those skills and then apply it to their life. It helps you to live a life aligned with your, soul. And that's what we're all here to do. And you said something really important.  You said, you get instruction from your, spirit guide, in the mornings and sometimes in the evenings because the mind chatter is turned off.

So if you wake up with a song in your head, go look up the lyrics because that's your, soul guide, planting a song in your head. And when you read those lyrics, that's, clairaudience, clear hearing.

Book Guides: Mystical Connections with Soul Guides and Divine Teachers
Book Guides: Mystical Connections with Soul Guides and Divine Teachers

Book: Mystical Connections with Soul Guides and Divine Teachers

Myrna: Tel us about your book: Mystical Connections with Soul Guides and Divine teachers. Why did you write it and what do you want the readers to walk away with after after they finished reading it?

Marilyn:  I wrote the book because my, soul guides, really changed my life. I was suicidal. I was really depressed. I was really unhappy. And when I met my, guides, and I learned what I was capable of and how I was supposed to help people. I really understood why I was here. And that gave me, I don't like to say the word purpose because I feel like it always evolves our purpose, but it really gave me understanding.

So I hope that when people read it, they can have that peaceful connection or when things are really disruptive in their lives. They have a tool or a technique to connect to something larger than themselves so that they don't feel alone and they recognize that there is hope. Because I feel like that's what my, soul guides, gave me.

Myrna: That's great.  Do you see your, spirit guides, or do you feel them?

Marilyn: So I see, hear, feel, sense, everybody can develop these skills. So yes, I see my spirit guides. I know where they stand. It's a big thing for me. You need to know where they stand so that when you're talking to them, you're there in different spots. For me I have different, guides, but if I'm speaking to my main guide who's in front of me, my whole inner awareness is directed at her and I teach people in the book how to do that with their breath.

I'm sure you've had that experience when you get a download and you're like, I know everything. I know what to do. I feel my, guides, and I sense things as well. So sensing them is not the same as feeling because I know them so well. I know their names. I know where they stand. I know what they're here for.

Myrna: You are a, psychic medium, let's talk about an ordinary person.

Marilyn: Well, in the book, there's exercises to help you see and feel your, spirit guides, I think to hear also.

Myrna: how can readers connect with you and get a copy of your book?

Marilyn: Go to my website. www.marilynalauria.com   I'm on social media as well on Instagram and Facebook. So if you liked what you hear, let me know. Let me know what your takeaway was and I will communicate with you. Thank you so much. Thanks,

How To Get Out Of The Snares of Child Abuse

Out of the Snares, a story of hope and encouragement is a book written to encourage women of color who were born in lack. It showcases my, personal growth, journey and how I got, out of the snares, of poverty and, child abuse.

This is my interview on the Books of the Month show on www.ptwwntv.com

Listen to the interview:

Introduction to Out Of the Snares

Myrna – I am a, life coach, I host a show on the preach the word television network called Transform Your Mind to Transform Your Life, one of the reasons that I wrote the book, Out of the Snares, is because I believe and I wanted to encourage women that it is not where we come from, but where we end up that’s important.

It's also the only way that we can go through that transition like from a caterpillar to a butterfly is if we allow the things that happen to us in life help us with, personal growth.  We should use challenges to transform ourselves and for our, personal development.

So, the book, Out of the Snares, is basically a story of my life.  I wrote it from a, life coaching, perspective with 10 principles of, life experiences, that happened to me and what I learned from those, life experiences.

I’m a, life coach, but I do most of my coaching on my show Transform Your Mind. It is a radio, podcast and a television show.

Dr O.C Pringle:  You're doing it all sister Young, you're doing it all right and so of course your inspiration would be your, life's experience, and, child abuse. let's talk about that.

Out of the Snares of Child Sexual Abuse

Myrna:  I was, sexually abused, as a child in Guyana by a family friend.  He was technically my Godfather, but being from a third world country, a very poor country and he was very rich.

We would call him a, pedophile, he showered me with a lot of attention,  and bought me a lot of gifts and then took advantage of that.

I didn't realize that we were doing anything wrong until I became 13 and started having Boyfriends.

DR O.C Pringle: Until you became what?  Wait how old were you?

Myrna:  This, sexual abuse, began at age 10.

Dr O.C Pringle: Wow did anything ever happen to this guy?

Myrna: No, because like most children I didn’t say anything about it. I told no one. This book was my first experience talking about it and I in my 40’s when I wrote, Out of the Snares. My dad read the book and was very upset that he did not know this was going on.

Children carry a lot of shame regarding, sexual abuse, I still carried shame when I wrote, Out of the Snare. As you can see I used my maiden name Trotman for the author name.

Transform Your Mind iHeart Radio
iHeart Radio

Dr. O.C Pringle: So, you placed Myrna Bernadette Trotman on the cover of the book, because you didn't want people to know it was you, but your picture is on the cover!!

Myrna: I started to release shame when I started talking about the, sexual abuse, and when I learnt that children can’t give consent for sex. So whatever guilt and shame that I had attached to my, sexual abuse, I released it.

Dr O.C Pringle: Well listen it worked out for your good, but all things work together for the good of them that loved God and are called according to his, purpose, so your, sexual abuse, worked in your favor. You were able to redirect that energy into something positive where you're helping people all over the world.  You're on radio and on television, yes you are some kind of a woman.

Helping Women of Color Date Effectively

I got certified as a, relationship coach, and started working with thousands of women and men all around the world.  I don't want your listeners to think I focus just on women.

I am very focused on how men are thinking about, dating, and, relationships, as well.  So  I've been doing my own thing as an entrepreneur and coaching women all around the world, specifically, women of color.  Smart, successful, women of color, on how to heal their heart, how to date effectively and then, How to Get Their Guy, on my podcast.

Myrna -It sounds like you were born with the aptitude for this work because when people start doing things earlier on in life, it is usually their purpose. We are experiencing huge growth on, dating apps, and the, online dating, world During, COVID 19, pandemic. Do you think the, dating, world will be forever changed after, COVID 19?

Is online Dating Here to Stay

Anwar – I think about, online dating, the same way I think about online purchases and e-commerce. During the last year we have been buying most of everything online. I know for the clients that I work with, dating apps, is the primary way that they are meeting future partners or just, dating, in general. That that's going to be the case after, COVID 19. When things open back and we can date in person again, I thing like e-commerce, 20% of people will remain on, dating apps.

It's crazy because it's similar in terms of, online dating.  Roughly 20% of, relationships, came from, online dating, right now that looks like a little bit more like 40 to 50%.

How can one find success dating during COVID 19

Anwar- It depends on what their definition of success means. For some marriage is not their end goal, they just want to connect with someone. My clients have different wants and desires.  The other thing that I wanted to about success in, online dating, is specifically during this time is that we have the time to self-reflect and to have more self-awareness.

You have to bring your whole entire self to this, love game, or you're not going to be successful. If you're you not addressing the things that you have been avoiding or ignoring or ashamed of and you're hiding those parts of yourself, then people are not really getting to know you or able to love you fully.  So, take this time to address and heal some of those things so that when they are meeting their person, they can be ready to be the best partner that they can be.

Myrna – Do you think that people can do self-reflection themselves or they're hiring a, dating coach, like you for instance.

Hiring a Dating Coach Helps you become your best self

Anwar –  Some are hiring a, dating coach, I think the coaching industry has exploded. People have had the time and space to sit back, exhale and be like oh I’m not happy about these things.  Instead of working and doing that rat race.

Coaches can help you with those blind spots to accelerate that work and potentially that healing to get you to your goal faster.

Myrna – 95% of us are not living conscious lives which means that they can't sit down and self-evaluate or see their blind spots.

Anwar – I think there are a couple of things when I think about kind of mindset shifts when it comes to, dating. First is a lot of people try to date their clone, someone who's just like them.  If I am from the Caribbean and I am a Christian and I work in IT, that is who they want to partner with.

I have a really great success rate in terms of getting my clients partnering with someone who is not their clone. I think it's important for us to realize that we have to be more open-minded when it comes to, dating, and realize that it's not about what their resume or what their paper looks like; it's really about how they're making me feel.

I work with smart and successful women.  My clients are Harvard educated and most of them has a list of the things they want in a man. We have to shift our mindset around, you had an amazing time with this person.

On the men's side it's about really how she looks and how seductive she is and her

curvature and all of that, so we have to think beyond that and really focus in on the things that are going to fulfill us from a long-term perspective, because chemistry is short lived.

Is Compatibility more important than Chemistry in Dating?

Another mindset shift that I want us to be thinking about is, compatibility vs chemistry.  How we how we vibe, how we connect, how we mesh.  I always think of, compatibility, is. Can we make a thousand decisions in one day together?  Because that's really what being a really in a, relationship, is all about.  You must be able to be on the same page on a lot of different subjects.

The mindset shift is about prioritizing, compatibility, over, chemistry. I think a lot of people are focused on the, chemistry, when they're, dating, and not the, compatibility.  The, chemistry, is those butterflies in my stomach.  Chemistry, chemically fades within 18 months from our body and then all you are left with is, compatibility.

When you look at, divorce rates, those first two years are so crucial, because often times what happens is that, chemistry, starts to fade during that time.

Dating Advice on Finding the Right Guy

If you're a woman out there and you want a guy that is making six figures that's great; but that's only nine percent of the population.

  • If you want a guy who is six feet tall, that's good; but that's roughly eight percent of the population
  • If you want a man with a graduate degree that's six percent of people out there
  • If you want someone who owns their own home that’s 20% of the population.
  • Multiply all of that together you actually have a one percent chance of finding your guy and that's not even taking into account if that person likes you back.

You must know how this, love game, works. Nine out of the ten people that you meet are not going to be the one. Knowing the numbers ahead of time saves your heart and saves any of the mental chatter, you know of the stories that you tell yourself.  The ones that don't serve you, I am not good enough, I will never meet the right guy.

How Women Get a Seat at the Table

Women are you invisible in the boardroom and have no say? Do men listen when you speak? If the answer is no, then find out how to get, a seat at the table.

In this episode I interview Kimberley Bussey Lewis, Author of , A Seat At The Table, Or Part Of The Meal: Creating A Culture Of Diversity

How did you come to become passionate about, diversity and inclusion, for, women of color?

How to Get a Seat at The Table

I first really started thinking about, a seat at the table,  when I was a very young reporter in Charleston, South Carolina.  I was the only female reporter at the time within this 600 person company.  And what I was struck by is that there were so many decisions that were being made that we would complain about; but none of us had, a seat at the table, to help make those decisions.

I realized that if I didn't have a place in the room that I was both invisible and silent; so it didn't matter how much I complained or how much I didn't like what was going on or simply just didn't understand it because I was not part of the discussion; I needed, a seat at the table.

So that's where my passion for, diversity and inclusion, was born.

CNN wrote a column on getting, a seat at the table, for women. They were discussing congresswoman Harris, basically what they're saying was that women are invisible and they have no say.  When they speak no one listens.  So I understand what you are saying.

What happens when there is no seat at the table

I stayed in that company as a reporter without, a seat at the table, about 12 years.  It took me that long to get that awakening.  Sometimes we think that we are fortunate to have a job so we don't want to stir the pot.  I just increasingly became more and more of a little rebel challenging the status quo. Eventually I left  and ventured out to write my first book.   I was scared to death.  Because here I am I'm going to write a book, I'm going to leave my job.  I took a leave of absence to write the book;  but it was really a step of faith and in writing the book and doing the research.

I became energized when I interviewed older relatives, my mother and great-aunt who were already in their 80s and 90s at the time. I  became energized by their tenacity as, Black women. I knew that we had a lot of strong men in my family, but my eyes are really flew open at the strength of the, black women, and how they held businesses up,  they held a family up and the men of the family up, and brought us all together.

I stumbled into the nonprofit arena by my volunteer work. I was volunteering and working on writing the  book and one thing led to another.  I got to a small job at an organization that was run by a, black woman, who became my mentor.  She took me under her wing and even though I was  just volunteering she taught me so much about strength and tenacity and making your voice count.

Diversity and Inclusion for Women of Color

Her company was called Family Assistance Management Services

And she was the first black female insurance broker in SC. She had been a full time teacher before she built quite a nest egg with her husband. They owned several pieces of property in Charleston SC. She then became a broker and started several businesses, an insurance company, a computer training clinic all kinds of other businesses, because she had a passion for helping people.

You got your feet wet on the nonprofit arena and but it sounds like you have, a seat at the table, at Goodwill Industries. Why you write the book, “A Seat at the Table or a part of the meal?”

I was born in September 1964 a month after the discrimination Act, and my parents had not long moved to Charleston, SC. All of my siblings, I  have one brother and two sisters, they had all been born at home in the country by a midwife so since it was now illegal for place public places to discriminate my father thought, well I will take my wife to this nice Hospital for my fourth child to be born.  So my mother was in labor he rushes her down to this hospital the Medical University of South Carolina and by this time she'd begun to hemorrhage as I was a breech baby.

It was pouring down rain and he got my mom into the emergency area into the lobby and he started screaming for the doctors to come and help they turned looked at them and turned their backs right away.  All the white doctors and nurses ignored them, so he ran up to them and screamed my wife is bleeding you got to help her and someone told him to just sit down we'll get to you.

So he scooped her up, put her in a wheelchair and ran with her down the street to the black Hospital. McLennan banks Hospital in the pouring rain with my mom gripping for life on that wheelchair.  He pushed her up into the emergency area and as soon as they saw that she was drenched in blood they rushed her into the emergency room and delivered me.  The doctor who delivered me was a, woman of color, from  South Africa and he named me Kimberly after the Kimberly diamond mines.

Black Women are born to be at the table

It sounds like you were born in to do this work!

I was tried of being the only, Black woman, in the room. I felt we as, Black women, have to do something to get , a seat at the table. If anyone was going to wave that flag of, diversity and inclusion, equity and of, diversity, it should be Goodwill Industries. So it really began then.  We started a task force with a group of CEOs and started to study, diversity and inclusion, and equity programs with fortune 500 companies and fortune 100 companies and other nonprofit organizations. We studied who was doing it well, what were they looking at, what were the metrics and how do you build that diverse pipeline.  We came up an implementation plan.

We were really intentional about attracting, maintaining and keeping a, diversity, workforce.  Whether it is individuals who are Hispanic or individuals who African-American or LGTBQ or disabled.  We recognize that all of that build a table of, diversity.

The first time that I heard the phrase, a seat at the table, was from one of my coaching clients and I've heard it several times since. I heard Gabrielle Union say it that she's just gonna make her own table because you know the black actresses in Hollywood are still working to, get a seat at the table.  They go through the same discrimination with, diversity and inclusion.  It's not just in Corporate America or in the board rooms.

Women of Color getting a seat at the table

Kimberly you have, a seat at the table,  what advice would you give to women who are hitting the glass ceiling and get, no seat at the table.

African-American women unfortunately have been absent from the room!  We have not even been invited into the room much less have, a seat at the table, for quite some time.  Women in general have been hitting the glass ceiling for quite a long time.  I've heard that men are hired based on what their hiring manager or that supervisor thinks that they can do while women are hired or promoted based on performance.  it is that way because the majority of the, seats at the table, are already held by men.  Predominantly white males and they look for men who look like act like they came from where they come from.

Black women in order to get, a seat at the table,  have to do 3 things:

  1. They have to network. It’s all about relationships. Else there is, no seat at the table. Everything that you do is about relationships and it's about networking.  If you didn't grow up playing golf, learn.  Go around places and do things that make you feel uncomfortable. But you must be part of the conversation. Go to the theater,  go to the Opera, you could serve as an usher and get free tickets.
  2. Get a mentor – All women should have a mentor.
  3. Get a Sponsor – a sponsor and a mentor are two different people. A mentor is someone that you can talk to about your fears and your aspirations. A mentor can give you sound advice and can talk you through some of the issues that you're having and help you create a plan a plan of attack.

A sponsor on the other hand is going to be that person who's going to make sure that you're invited to that meeting.  They're going to take you under their wing.  They're going to make sure that there's a place for you in the conversation and that there is, diversity and inclusion, that you are a part of the discussion. Sponsors are usually white males.
